    1. Bird in Hand

      BIRD IN HAND
      By Monica Pasqaul

She was young and you were, too,
but your heart was cold and gray
A pretty lass, as clear as glass, a diamond for a day
You held her hand, the promised land,
      her fears you did allay
Babe you had a bird in hand and in that hand she strayed

The sweetest words she'd ever heard,
they made her trip and sway
You took her down to the old red town
      and had your wicked way
      Morning came, nothing the same,
her feet had turned to clay
Babe you had a bird in hand and in that hand she lay

Time did pass, and she alas,
      felt something that did weigh
A sad-eyed girl, your country pearl
      had fallen, as they say
And when she cried, you turned aside,
      you pushed her love away
Babe you had a bird in hand and in that hand she stayed

She was young and you were too,
but your heart was cold and gray
When the summer breeze turned to autumn leaves
      you took yourself away
You never thought of her sad lot,
      she faced a judgment day
Babe you had a bird in hand, a bird that hand betrayed

Years went by, (& all that implies)
      And with age came dismay
Your thoughts transformed, your heart grew warm,
      you changed your wicked ways
      Remembered love, a simple dove,
      your diamond in the hay
Babe you had a bird in hand, a hand you overplayed

You went down to the old red town,
the streets in dust now paved
      Your pretty thing, a memory,
      had long since slipped away
They said she died by the riverside
      on a chilly autumn day
Babe you had a bird in hand but the bird has flown away

    2. Big Big Bed

      Big Big Bed
      By Jane Selkye

I need a big big bed
to save the dreams that I've dreamt
Catch 'em in this linen net
and keep 'em so I don't forget

I've seen my auntie's bed she lives in Amarillo
There's room to lie down but they ain't no room to spare
So Auntie's dreams fell to the floor and got lost in the night
I don't believe her when she says she don't mind

      Better make my ceilings high
and keep the windows open deep into the night
Because I'll float up and cast off the sheets
and drift into the midnight trees

When he's here my bed's gonna have to be bigger
'Cause my love runs wide, my love runs wider than a Texas river

I want the whole cake I won't settle for the crumbs
Gimme room to the side and room up above
Because I'm in such a big big love
it's just too big to fall out of

When he's here my bed's gonna have to be bigger
'Cause my love runs wide, my love runs wider than a Texas river
My bed's gonna have to be bigger
'Cause my love runs wide, my love runs wider than a Texas river

    3. Living Without You

      LIVING WITHOUT YOU
      By Renee Harcourt

      I'm a hacker I'm a con, I can't even write a song
I can't sing a note if you paid me
No one home, always gone, never right always wrong
And I haven't got a God who can save me

But I'm living without you, living without you
I'm living without you, living without you

      I'm a loner, I'm unkind, I'm a prisoner in my mind
I'm exhausted long before the sunrise
I'm a skeptic and dissatisfied with everything I find
I'm as bitter as a gin and quinine

But I'm living without you, living without you
I'm living without you, living without you

Sweet and sour at the same time
      Mink and a porcupine
      Speeding ticket and a valentine

      I'm a liar, I'm a cheat, I don't say what I mean
I used to care about the world around me
Lost to a thief on a dry winter leaf
I wouldn't know love if it found me

But I'm living without you, living without you
I'm living without you, living without you
But I'm living without you, living without you
I'm living without you, living without you

Sweet and sour at the same time
      Mink and a porcupine
      Speeding ticket and a valentine
      Acid and alkaline

    4. Mona Lisa Smile

      MONA LISA SMILE
      By Monica Pasqual

Here I am, I'm trying to be fair
It falls apart, but baby I still care
      The love's not gone
      But I'm not strong

And on one ever said I'd have to be
The Mona Lisa with a smile
I can't get out of bed, oh, can't you see?
This misery is not my style

There you are, blameless, that's for sure
You did not get the life that you deserved
      And time's been cruel
      And sad, it's true

But no one ever said I'd have to be
The Mona Lisa with a smile
I can't get out of bed, can't you see
This misery is not my style

Here we are, we don't know what to say
It falls apart, now we can't go – or stay
      The love's not gone
      But I'm not strong

And on one ever said I'd have to be
The Mona Lisa with a smile
I can't get out of bed, oh, can't you see?
This misery is not my style

No one ever said I'd have to leave
The part of me that was on fire
I used to feel the edge, now all I see
Is holding me from what is wild

And on one ever said I'd have to be
The Mona Lisa with a smile
I can't get out of bed, oh, can't you see?
This misery is not my style

    5. Pajaros Sin Alas

      PAJARO SIN ALAS
      By Monica Pasqual

      I'm a bird that doesn't fly
When I go, is it earth or is it sky?
Pajaro sin alas, pez que no nada
      I'm a fish that doesn't swim
When I sink, am I out or am I in?

      I'm a rose without a garden
I'm a brush without an artist
      Almost done before I started
      Almost done before I started

      I'm a bird that doesn't fly
When I go, is it earth or is it sky?
Pajaro sin alas, pez que no nada
      I'm a fish that doesn't swim
When I sink, am I out or am I in?

      I'm afraid I haven't tried it
I'm the maid, I'm not the bride
I Always tried to justify it
      Always tried to justify it

      I'm a bird that doesn't fly
When I go, is it earth or is it sky?
Pajaro sin alas, pez que no nada
      I'm a fish that doesn't swim
When I sink, am I out or am I in?

      I'm a king without a nation
I'm a house with no foundation
      I'm a flashy imitation
      I'm a flashy imitation

      I'm a bird that doesn't fly
When I go, is it earth or is it sky?
Pajaro sin alas, pez que no nada
      I'm a fish that doesn't swim
When I sink, am I out or am I in?

      I'm a song without a player
      I'm a card without a wager
      I'm a minor not a major
      I'm a minor not a major

      I'm a bird that doesn't fly
When I go, is it earth or is it sky?
Pajaro sin alas, pez que no nada
      I'm a fish that doesn't swim
When I sink, am I out or am I in?

      Un tambor sin su ritmo
      Una cancion sin pajarito
      Un dolor sin su grito
      Un dolor sin su grito

      I'm a bird that doesn't fly
When I go, is it earth or is it sky?
Pajaro sin alas, pez que no nada
      I'm a fish that doesn't swim
When I sink, am I out or am I in?

      Un balcon sin la vista
      Un pallaso siempre triste
      Solamente una chispa
      Solamente una chisp

      I'm a bird that doesn't fly
When I go, is it earth or is it sky?
Pajaro sin alas, pez que no nada
      I'm a fish that doesn't swim
When I sink, am I out or am I in?

    6. Throw me a Bone

      THROW ME A BONE
      By Renee Harcourt

I don't want to compromise, I want to look into your eyes
I don't want to be in my head, let's make love in the bed
I don't want to cause you pain, speak your truth and let it rain
Let it rain, let it rain...

I try, but I can't get the wings to fly
I learn, but I can't get the wheels to turn
So I go it alone where nothing is known
Throw me a bone, throw me a bone

I don't want to work all day, I need a lot more time to play
I don't want to see the shrink at three, maybe there's nothing wrong with me
Wrong with me, wrong with me...

I try, but I can't get the wings to fly
I learn, but I can't get the wheels to turn
So I go it alone where nothing is known
Throw me a bone, throw me a bone

Floating out to sea, engine dead, no sail to set , a broken wing and a prayer
Hands tied behind my back, watch the train run off the track,
Do you want your money back, do you want

I don't want to waste your time, I just want to blow your mind
I don't want to lose more sleep, I just want to feel you deep
Feel you deep, feel you deep

I try, but I can't get the wings to fly
I learn, but I can't get the wheels to turn
So I go it alone where nothing is known
Throw me a bone, throw me a bone

    7. Back in the Saddle

(by Pam Delgado, Jeri Jones, Renee Harcourt, Kendall Harcourt and Monica Pasqual)

Every thing's changing but Sally's still trying
She gets up at five, just ahead of the morning
      Feathers are flying
You won't catch her falling behind

Swinging from trees it's a cold city jungle
Take what you need or get left in the rubble
      Don't look behind
It's just dust and a pile of dreams

Then it’s back in the ring
      Batter up taking a swing
Walk toward the beast and get
      Back in the saddle again

Every day Sally's supposed to look younger
Can't let them see desperation or hunger
      Feathers are flying
      But everything’s running on time

Swinging from trees but the branches seem higher
Afraid to look down, situation is dire
      Falling behind
Just like dust and a pile of dreams

Then it’s back in the ring
      Batter up taking a swing
Walk toward the beast and get
      Back in the saddle again

Just like an hour glass glued to the table, time passing by
Just like an hour glass glued to the table, time passing, time passing by

Sometimes when Sally feels sad in the evening
She remembers a girl with a paintbrush and reason
      Feathers were flying
Couldn't catch her then if you tried

Then it’s back in the ring
      Batter up taking a swing
Walk toward the beast and get
      Back in the saddle again

Sex, terror and God and money, money (x2)
      Countdown every night

    9. Wide Open Spaces

      WIDE OPEN SPACES
      By Renee Harcourt

Old habits do die hard and the family tree will play it's card
It draws from deep inside that ancient room
Words rattle on the line, bitter hooks and vicious rhyme
I just want to watch the flowers bloom

Wide open spaces. I can't wait 'til I can go
I see wide open spaces. Where there's a little room to grow

If just one thing would change, just one link in this dead end chain
Then dominoes would stop tumbling over
Nose to the old grindstone, I'll find the roots and crack the code
So I can hold that pretty 4 leaf clover

Wide open spaces. I can't wait 'til I can go
I see wide open spaces. Where there's a little room to grow

You might not want to take this melody apart
But I feel changes coming on
I've been forgiven and I'm making my new start
I'd just as soon you come along

You might be all snuffed out, night and day drenched in doubt
But I know at least one thing that could free ya
This kettle's boiling hot, sardines are swirling in the pot
And I think Jane, she's got the right idea

Wide open spaces. I can't wait for us to go
I see wide open spaces. Where there's a lot room to grow
Wide open spaces. See the sunlight dancing through
Wide open spaces. Days of gold and skies of blue

    10. Take Me There

      TAKE ME THERE
      By Monica Pasqual

Take me there, take me with care
Take me out where the land ends
Fingers in hand, toes in the sand
I want to stand where it all begins again

      Time is strange, all disarranged
and I am un-caged and falling
into these dreams, they're running like streams
      outside the seams and calling

Where the atmosphere is sweet and heavy
      I could disappear right now,
      I'm ready, I could disappear

Take me there, we'll lie down and stare
at clouds and compare our follies
Stretched on the sand, the sweet motherland
the air that I am recalling

Life is strange, we lose and regain
      and sometimes remain just standing
Notions and schemes, like broken machines
      with no gasoline lie abandoned

Where the atmosphere is sweet and heavy
I could disappear right now, I'm ready, I could disappear

Take me there, take me with care
Take me out where the land ends
Fingers in hand, toes in the sand
I want to stand where it all begins again

  • Live at Stern Grove
    1. Fillmore Street
I took up breathing this morning
It hurts, but still, at least there's pain
My feet were flying off the pavement
I turned down Fillmore Street again

I think I'm onto something, baby
You can't tell me I'm not changed
The woolen blankets won't console me
I turned down Fillmore Street again

      Feel more, Feel
      Feel, Feel
      Feel more, Feel
I turned down Fillmore Street again

And like the earth that's week with water
I'm a mudslide coming down, down, down
      But underneath this ruined monster
      Something green is pushing up
      Something green is pushing up
      Something green is pushing

      Feel more, Feel
      Feel, Feel
      Feel more, Feel
I turned down Fillmore Street again

      All the world
      And I'm alive in it
      All the world
      And I'm alive, I'm alive

      Feel more, Feel
      Feel, Feel
      Feel more, Feel
I turned down Fillmore Street again
    2. Jump Start
I live inside a magazine. I’m a juggler, balancing routine
Smoke and mirrors, wood, steel, skin and rock ‘n roll
You see that world in my eyes. I work to keep it safe and alive.
Some place in between restless and secure

I stood out in left field watching
Birds painting the clear blue sky
When I stood out in left field watching

You snuck up on me like a wildfire
Sparks and flames flashing and flying
And I felt the light inside jumpstart

They train wild tigers to heel. Make devices to stop a rolling wheel.
And junkies get clean, make amends and start anew
I could ask the universe for wealth. Pray to God I’ll always have my health
But I’ll wait a long, lonely night for you

I stood out in left field watching
Birds painting the clear blue sky
When I stood out in left field watching

You snuck up on me like a wildfire
Sparks and flames flashing and flying
And I felt the light inside jumpstart

You jump started every little feeling that I’ve pushed away,
      compromised, isolated, memorized
You jump started every little fantasy I’ve entertained to
go insane, I can’t contain, baby you’re to blame

I stood out in left field watching
Birds painting the clear blue sky
When I stood out in left field watching

You snuck up on me like a wildfire
Sparks and flames flashing and flying
And I felt the light inside jumpstart
    3. Trouble
      Well, I’m in trouble…
Well you come up from the fire
and you’re calling out my name
I can’t hide in holy water
Feel the heat right through the rain
      I got pleasure double
I’m in trouble and it’s heaven
      I like misbehavin’
and your pastures look so green
      I’m about to show you
what I don’t want you to see
      I got pleasure double
I’m in trouble and it’s heaven

      There’s a place for me
between the heavens and the deep
that’s sometimes dark and sometimes sweet
I’m gonna take this ride for a little while
      You know what I mean

You say rules are just for reference
So take me across that yellow line
      You provide the inspiration
That I need to feel inclined
      I got pleasure double
I’m in trouble and it’s heaven

      There’s a place for me
between the heavens and the deep
That’s sometimes dark and sometime sweet
I’m gonna take this ride for a little while
      You know what I mean

Well I’m not afraid of wisdom
      but I like flying blind
      I still want my salvation
but I’m gonna take my time
      I got pleasure double
I’m in trouble and it’s heaven

      There’s a place for me
between the heavens and the deep
That’s sometimes dark and sometime sweet
I’m gonna take this ride for a little while
      You know what I mean
    4. La Llorona
Todos me dicen El Negro, Llorona,
      negro pero cariñoso
Todos me dicen El Negro, Llorona,
      negro pero cariñoso

Yo soy como el chile verde, Llorona,
      picante pero sabroso
Yo soy como el chile verde, Llorona,
      picante pero sabroso

      Ay de mi Llorona
      Llorona de ayer y hoy
      Ay de mi Llorona
      Llorona de ayer y hoy

      Ayer maravilla fuí, Llorona,
      y ahora ni sombra soy
      Ayer maravilla fuí, Llorona,
      y ahora ni sombra soy

Dicen que no tengo duelo Llorona,
      porque no me ven llorar
Dicen que no tengo duelo Llorona,
      porque no me ven llorar

Hay muertos que no hacen ruido Llorona,
y es mas grande su penar
Hay muertos que no hacen ruido Llorona,
y es mas grande su penar

      Ay de mi Llorona,
      Llorona de azul celeste
      Ay de mi Llorona,
      Llorona de azul celeste

Y aunque la vida me cueste Llorona,
      no dejaré de quererte
Y aunque la vida me cueste Llorona,
      no dejaré de quererte
    5. All Rise
First they took me down a road
Not a road I’d ever seen, it was dark and it was cold
      Mortal end, mortal gold
Fight or flight, this crazy ride, I’m better letting go
      CHORUS
All rise. All rise hear the recommendation
All rise. Sometimes the guide’s disguised in pain
All rise. All rise hear the recommendation
Meet the guide with an open light, all rise

And then they came into my home
They knocked me down and took everything I owned
I tried to see beyond alone
Where empty makes room for something new and unknown

      CHORUS

Then they showed me to a shrine
Tall and shimmering, it illuminated time
My eyes followed up the line
And I could not conform, and I could not confine

      CHORUS
    6. Pass the Buddha
Green tea, green tea, I gave up coffee look at me
Corn fed family freak, next is alcohol and meat
Cramp cage, free range, victimize, assimilate
Dairy gone, wheat, weight, everybody clean your plate

Please, pass the Buddha. A hit of Mr. B, open eye number three
Pass the Buddha, please. I’m ready to land, I gotta get him in my hand
Pass the Buddha, please. I need a little calm, the west has gone so wrong

Big house, fast car, what you drive is who you are
Nest egg, five star, Joie de vivre and caviar
Breath deep, water leak, oxygen supply is weak
Wise seed, noble deed, impermanent created thing

Please, pass the Buddha. A hit of Mr. B, open eye number three
Pass the Buddha, please. I’m ready to land, I gotta get him in my hand
Pass the Buddha, please. I need a little calm, the west has gone so wrong

You can tell yourself you’re living pretty conscious and clean
Turn around to find you’ve fallen straight down into the hands of the machine

      H-D-T-V, prescription drug for everything
Quick fix, awakening, side effects are gonna sting
Read the label, redefine, buy local from the vine
Never steal, never lie, downward dog and you’ll be fine

Please, pass the Buddha. A hit of Mr. B, open eye number three
Pass the Buddha, please. I’m ready to land, I gotta get him in my hand
Pass the Buddha, please. We need a little calm, the west has gone so wrong
    7. Night of 1000 Stars

The fragile eyes of a man with a gun who stands for nothing
And all he wants is a little peace and quiet, but she keeps talking
Now he ain't sure if he heard right, but she sounds like leaving
He puts his hands on his ears and says, 'I don't believe this'

16 months, his last tour, and he walked through fire
When Captain said 'Sergeant jump', he'd just ask 'how high, sir?'
Now he ain't sure if he heard right, but she sounds like leaving
He puts his hands on her arms and says, 'you must be dreaming'

Night of a thousand stars, miles from the ground
      World spinning round and round

Days of slaughter and rage, he'd dream of Angel
And in her arms he would rise high above the turmoil
Now he ain't sure if he heard right, but she looks like leaving
He puts his hand on his gun and says, not while I'm breathing

Night of a thousand stars, miles from the ground
      World spinning round and round
Night of a thousand stars, miles from the ground
      World spinning round and round

The fragile eyes of a man with a gun who stands for nothing
And all he wants is a little peace and quiet

    8. Hurricane

      She's almost a hurricane
I'll tell you what that means
It means she isn't quite as strong as she wants you to believe

She'll spin on through the tangled trees
Her tears blend with the rain
      She's almost a hurricane...
      She's almost a hurricane

She's knows you're enjoying the weather
The way it changes and blows you to the ground
She can call it in to come
She can call it in to go...

      She's almost a hurricane
I'll tell you what that means
It means she isn't quite as strong as she wants you to believe
She'll spin on through the tangled trees
Her tears blend with the rain
      She's almost a hurricane...
      She's almost a hurricane

Feel her rising from far away
Mostly blue skies mixed with gray
She's got that slow build forward
      To forever in a day...

      She's almost a hurricane
I'll tell you what that means
It means she isn't quite as strong as she wants you to believe
She'll spin on through the tangled trees
Her tears blend with the rain
      She's almost a hurricane...
      She's almost a hurricane

      touch her she'll be silent
      touch her she'll be stronger
      touch her she'll break open
And be falling all around you

She'll move you from bitter to end
      Waterfalls of sweetness and sin
Lay you down And begin to build again...
      She's almost a hurricane
I'll tell you what that means…

    2. Over You
      OVER YOU (Renee Harcourt)

I had a taste. I had a bite. And now I’m hungry every night.
My plate is empty. My cupboard’s bare. You left me hanging without a prayer.
I know we said it never should have happened. It might have been the cool night air.

      CHORUS
I can’t get over you. I can’t forget no matter what I do.
I can’t get over you. I can’t find the will or the fortitude.

It’s like a test inside my head. I wake up wet in an empty bed.
You’re in my dreams. You’re on my mind. I can’t escape you. I’m crucified.
I know we said never again. Sensible discipline.

I can’t get over you. I can’t forget no matter what I do.
I can’t get over you. I can’t find the will or the fortitude.

      BRIDGE
Time takes care of every little thing. Only time ticking by, only time ticking by
Every minute’s like a God damn day, only time ticking by, only time ticking by

Deadly sin. Attempted virtue. May prudence and faith divert you.
It’s always messy and never clean. A can of worms Saint Augustine.
I know we said it felt so right. Wrong is enticingly nice.

I can’t get over you. I can’t forget no matter what I do.
I can’t get over you. I can’t find the will or the fortitude.
    3. Vera Chiesa
The air was ripe with the city’s ancient artistry
the night I went to see
      the witch of Turin, Italy
She said he’s soon to be born another entity
She said he’d come to me
a second time a boy of three
She spoke about the man that I was
      meant to marry
She spoke about the man who’s love
      I always carry

      Vera Chiesa, Vera Chiesa
His body was taken but his soul is reborn
      Vera Chiesa, Vera Chiesa
His body was taken but his soul is reborn

Before he left me we lived in Central Italy
Before he left me we shared a
      million secrecies
A thousand kisses as the sun was
      setting amber
      A thousand thoughts
      I try often to remember
Years beyond our prime the moths
      came to the flame
      For years beyond our fears
      the cancer had its way
It makes you beg for answers

      Vera Chiesa, Vera Chiesa
His body was taken but his soul is reborn
      Vera Chiesa, Vera Chiesa
His body was taken but his soul is reborn

Four years passed and quite by chance
      or so it seemed
A woman made her way to me with
      her son of three
      They had also been
to see the witch of Turin, Italy
who spoke to them of my lost love
      now his soul she sees
I lay before the boy all his things I’d kept
      The way they prove the
      Dalai Lama in Tibet
He clutched them to his heart

      Vera Chiesa, Vera Chiesa
His body was taken but his soul is reborn
      Vera Chiesa, Vera Chiesa
His body was taken but his soul is reborn
    4. Hurricane

      She's almost a hurricane
I'll tell you what that means
It means she isn't quite as strong as she wants you to believe

She'll spin on through the tangled trees
Her tears blend with the rain
      She's almost a hurricane...
      She's almost a hurricane

She's knows you're enjoying the weather

Feel her rising from far away
Mostly blue skies mixed with gray
She's got that slow build forward
      To forever in a day...

      She's almost a hurricane
I'll tell you what that means
It means she isn't quite as strong as she wants you to believe
She'll spin on through the tangled trees

    5. Constance No More

      Silent She comes
To the red room with the mirror on the door
And her name is Constance, no more

      Silent She comes
When our eyes close but the blankets are down
And her name is Constance, no more

We hide, though we see it like it is
We hide, though we see it like it is

      Silent She comes
When the night falls but the curtain's not drawn
And her name is Constance, no more

      Silent She comes
Like a prophet, like a storm on the calm
And her name is Constance, no more

We hide, though we feel it like it is
We hide, though we feel it like it is

      Silent She comes
With her fortunes, with her omens and smiles

      Silent She comes
With her beauty, with her potions and vials
      Constance, no more

      Silent She comes
Like a specter, like a shadow too soon
And She comes through the mirror on the door of our room
      Constance, no more

We hide, though we see it like it is
We hide, though we see it like it is
We hide, though we feel it like it is
We hide, though we feel it like it is

    6. All Rise
First they took me down a road
Not a road I’d ever seen, it was dark and it was cold
      Mortal end, mortal gold
Fight or flight, this crazy ride, I’m better letting go
      CHORUS
All rise. All rise hear the recommendation
All rise. Sometimes the guide’s disguised in pain
All rise. All rise hear the recommendation
Meet the guide with an open light, all rise

And then they came into my home
They knocked me down and took everything I owned
I tried to see beyond alone
Where empty makes room for something new and unknown

      CHORUS

Then they showed me to a shrine
Tall and shimmering, it illuminated time
My eyes followed up the line
And I could not conform, and I could not confine

      CHORUS
    7. Jump Start
I live inside a magazine. I’m a juggler, balancing routine
Smoke and mirrors, wood, steel, skin and rock ‘n roll
You see that world in my eyes. I work to keep it safe and alive.
Some place in between restless and secure

I stood out in left field watching
Birds painting the clear blue sky
When I stood out in left field watching

You snuck up on me like a wildfire
Sparks and flames flashing and flying
And I felt the light inside jumpstart

They train wild tigers to heel. Make devices to stop a rolling wheel.
And junkies get clean, make amends and start anew
I could ask the universe for wealth. Pray to God I’ll always have my health
But I’ll wait a long, lonely night for you

I stood out in left field watching
Birds painting the clear blue sky
When I stood out in left field watching

You snuck up on me like a wildfire
Sparks and flames flashing and flying
And I felt the light inside jumpstart

You jump started every little feeling that I’ve pushed away,
      compromised, isolated, memorized
You jump started every little fantasy I’ve entertained to
go insane, I can’t contain, baby you’re to blame

I stood out in left field watching
Birds painting the clear blue sky
When I stood out in left field watching

You snuck up on me like a wildfire
Sparks and flames flashing and flying
And I felt the light inside jumpstart
    8. I’m Waiting
Bridges are falling, my savior's not calling,
      Something appalling could happen today
Caught in the traffic, the wrong demographic,
I guess I could laugh or I could just go away
There was a time when I walked in the light
When I walked in the light, I walked in the light
      I was a dreamer, a sure-footed schemer
A devil, redeemer, an angel in flight
      Now I'm Waiting

Dark night on a lonely road
Tail lights show me where to go
      I won't fight, I won't pretend to know
Dark night, show me where to go

Hours keep passing, I'm chasing the last thing
      What's really happening? What's happening?
Every thing's beeping, it’s flashing or speaking
      Attention-seeking, what does it mean?
When I was younger there was a hunger
An urge and a wonder, a fear and delight
Life was a stage and I was a player
Not just some tax-payer with no end in sight

      (Chorus)

      Everything's burning but nobody's learning
We twist and we turn and we clutch and we slide
      Faster and faster, avoiding disaster
No question, no answer, no spirit, no guide
When I was younger there was a hunger
An urge and a wonder, a fear and delight
All I could see, the earth and the trees
I could believe in truth and in light

Pass the Buddha, please. I’m ready to land, I gotta get him in my hand

    10. The Golden Gate
Paint a dream yellow, gold and green
Live inside a work of art
Write a song of loving someone long
      And spill the wine
      right from your heart
You can live a lot of little lies
      They bend your twisted
      mind around you
      And turn your back
      on all the little signs
      of a vision going blind

      Save away
      You can never have
      enough for a rainy day
      Save away
      Standing naked staring into space
I almost flew off the Golden Gate

      Feel the water
      looking at your daughter
Touch the light upon her face
      Hope that one day
she’ll know why you went away
Forgive yourself your fall from grace
You can see a lot of little lines
grow around your eyes without you
Make a place for all the little times
you might have done it right

      Save away
You can never have enough for a rainy day
      Save away
      Standing naked staring into space
      Empty, hollow
      I gave it all away
I almost flew off the Golden Gate

      Standing naked staring into space
      Forgive yourself
You had a fall from grace
Watch the lines growing on your face
Save them up, save a space
Cut the flowers, drop them in a vase
Watch your daughter run another race
Love will go, gone without a trace
Save it up, save a space

      Save away
You can never have enough for a rainy day
      Save away
      You never know when
you need it for a rainy day
      Save away
      Save away
    11. Fear of Flying
      Who will hold my hand
when I take off and land
      Who will hold my hand
when I take off and land
      Who will hold my hand
      Who will hold my hand

So I see your rooftop fade below me
I’m free but I’m not all together me
And they say true changes come
      from blue skies and thunder
      but I wonder

      Who will hold my hand
when I take off and land
      Who will hold my hand
when I take off and land
      Who will hold my hand
      Who will hold my hand

So I keep your music in my headphones
All my safety’s just above your beat
And I fly above the fear and over
      and over

      Who will hold my hand
when I take off and land
      Who will hold my hand
when I take off and land
      Who will hold my hand
      Who will hold my hand

So I keep your music in my
      headphones
All my safety’s just above your beat
And they say true changes come
      from blue skies and thunder
      but I wonder

      Who will hold my hand
when I take off and land
      Who will hold my hand
when I take off and land
      Who will hold my hand
      Who will hold my hand
    12. Wood, a Hammer and a Nail

Wood, a hammer and a nail
      And a fare-thee-well
      Truth, sharper than a knife
      In the face of lies

Sweet as rain on a summer night
Sweet as rain on a summer night

Love, a rose that's made of steel
      And you keep it real
Time, it hasn't changed a thing
      Because the bells still ring

Sweet as rain on a summer night
Sweet as rain on a summer night

      Give until you give away
      The price you'll pay
      Truth, stronger than the blight
      Where you shine your light

Sweet as rain on a summer night
Sweet as rain on a summer night
Sweet as rain on a summer night

  • Severland
    1. Severland
I’m lost in Severland, I’ll never make my way home even though I try
Grief stuck on me, I can’t cut her loose, she only lets me cry

I was advised and warned to have my pain, then wash it clean
I did not take heed now that wicked thing... it lives it me.

Aaahhh. I’ll never be free. Ahhhh. Because it lives in me.

The fall wind blows, and the white fog rolls in across the sky
Sad struck me down, I can’t turnaround, she likes to see me cry

Aaahhh. She likes to see me cry. Ahhhh. She never lets me fly

I’m sorry I let go, I’m always with you
      I’m sorry I didn’t know, I always miss you
      I’m sorry I couldn’t stop us

I’m lost in Severland, I’ll never make my way home even though I try
Grief stuck on me, I can’t cut her loose, she only lets me cry

I was advised and warned to have my pain, then wash it clean
I did not take heed now that wicked thing... it lives it me.

Aaahhh. I swear I’ll never be free.
Somebody help me, this thing lives in me.

I’m sorry I let go, I’m always with you
      I’m sorry I didn’t know, I always miss you
I’m sorry I couldn’t stop us from our heartache
    2. Fillmore Street
I took up breathing this morning
It hurts, but still, at least there's pain
My feet were flying off the pavement
I turned down Fillmore Street again

I think I'm onto something, baby
You can't tell me I'm not changed
The woolen blankets won't console me
I turned down Fillmore Street again

      Feel more, Feel
      Feel, Feel
      Feel more, Feel
I turned down Fillmore Street again

And like the earth that's week with water
I'm a mudslide coming down, down, down
      But underneath this ruined monster
      Something green is pushing up
      Something green is pushing up
      Something green is pushing

      Feel more, Feel
      Feel, Feel
      Feel more, Feel
I turned down Fillmore Street again

      All the world
      And I'm alive in it
      All the world
      And I'm alive, I'm alive

      Feel more, Feel
      Feel, Feel
      Feel more, Feel
I turned down Fillmore Street again
    3. House Of The Living
Peel away the dark, it’s old and hard
      but far below
my heart is young and shy
      Peel away the years,
      acquired fears and hidden tears
      that helped a girl survive

Because I feel like heaven and hell
could meet right here in your arms

      The schizophrenic segregations
      Every trend a sovereign nation
      Shallow waters filled with gold
Do you dare to ask the question
Give me more than fifteen seconds
Do you really want to know?

Because I feel like heaven and hell
could meet right here in your arms

      Peel away the cruel indifference
      We can’t pretend innocence
because there’s nothing we don’t know
      Peel away the advertisements
      selling pleasures with no substance
on a shining road to nowhere
Give me all of your love
what is wretched, what is soft
Let me hate you, let me care

Because I feel like heaven and hell
could meet right here in your arms

Peel away the mediocre image brokers
They’re jokers and the jokes on us
      Peel away the television selling
      bleak and twisted visions
      of a world that’s lost
    4. If You Tell A Lie
If you tell a lie again and again
it does not become the truth in the end
If your voice is loud and your lies are well heard
still it does not mean transformation has occurred

Water isn’t wine, brass isn’t gold
One day you’ll account for all the lies that you told

If you take the forest, if you steal it tree by tree
If you blacken the river, if you desecrate the sea
      You can wave your arms,
You can shout out from on high
But the truth is still the truth
and a lie is still a lie

Water isn’t wine, brass isn’t gold
      One day you’ll account
for all the priceless things you sold

      You can speak of God
while you lead your Holy War
As if your hands weren’t stained
      by the oil you adore
      More innocents will die
      and more soldiers will fall
You name your church for God
but it was greed that built those walls

Water isn’t wine, brass isn’t gold
      One day you’ll account
for all the lives that you stole

      Two faced yes fool
      Pin striped suit ghoul

      You can make a promise
      and some people might believe
That you are not beholden to the power,
      to the greed
But if they should fall ill,
or their schools should fall down
Should they fall on hard times
Well I doubt you'll be around

Water isn't wine, brass isn't gold
And it's wrong that we should pay
for a crown that you stole
Water isn't wine, brass isn't gold
      One day you'll account
for all the lies that you told
    5. Besalu
The colored glass, the ancient stone
You and I stood there alone
A banner from the summer gone
      hailed 1000 years
A chair suspended from a wall
A Roman bridge that did not fall
      when bombs arrived in 1936

The light that followed us around
I fell in love in that old town
      where nothing changes,
      nothing goes away

Along the road we saw a man
      who ducked his head
      but raised his hand
      Then walked inside a gate
      and crossed a field
He might have been ten decades old
I wonder what it’s like to know
something so well it’s like there’s nothing else

The light that followed us around
I fell in love in that old town
      where nothing changes,
      nothing goes away

      I can see you standing
on the edge of that field
      Timid, unfamiliar with our mood
And I can feel your arm around
      my shoulders as we walk
along the cobbled streets of Besalu

The bells that told us it was time
      to catch the Barcelona line
Shadows marked the ending of a day

The light that followed us around
I fell in love in that old town
      where nothing changes,
      nothing goes away
    6. A Thousand Tiny Pieces
We will play his one out
      ‘til it explodes
      into a thousand tiny pieces
      What is your story, Universe
      You are melody and numbers
You are shapes and you are rhythms
There are signs that we can learn
      to place over the heavens
to predict how long they will burn
      How long will it last
Can I turn up the heat
      What star am I circling
      What is circling me
Now my ebb and my flow
      My lack of control
      Turning on turning off
      Saying yes but playing no
    7. Moth To A Flame
Sexy as a panther, charm a mile wide
      Brighter than the moon
      on a clear mountain night
Wild as a dragon, crazy as a loon
I knew it when you walked in the room

      I can’t stay away
Old salty dog and the sea
      I can’t stay away
Moth to a flame got nothin’ on me

Bold as an opera, deep as roots on a tree
Smooth as your wet ruby lips on me
Bottle on the table, candlelight dream
Fine drop is all that I need

      I can’t stay away
Old salty dog and the sea
      I can’t stay away
Moth to a flame got nothin’ on me

Hits me in the chest, cradles my heart
A mystery as simple as counting every star
      Time disappears, the magic remains
A song keeps calling my name

      I can’t stay away
Old salty dog and the sea
      I can’t stay away
Moth to a flame got nothin’ on me

My passions play to me every day
Ain’t nothing in this crazy little world
      gonna keep me away

      I can’t stay away
Old salty dog and the sea
      I can’t stay away
Moth to a flame got nothin’ on me
    8. Give A Damn
Take a harder road than the one you took before
Going with the flow, turning back at every door
      ‘Cause you’re older now,
      You’re stronger now
      You’re smarter now

A tree grows high when the roots go deep
Your peace will come, but it won’t come cheap
If you take this hand and you play for keeps
      and you give a damn
      and you give a damn

      You’ve been hiding out
You’ve been holding back your love
      I could teach you how
but you’d have to let me touch
      And not run away
      on the seventh day
      though you feel afraid

A tree grows high when the roots go deep
Your peace will come, but it won’t come cheap
If you take this hand and you play for keeps
      and you give a damn
      and you give a damn

Time slips by, you can’t deny
the heart that wants to beat
The price you pay along the way
makes what you get more sweet
You can run and you can hide
      and you can isolate
      But you can not escape
      no you can not escape

A tree grows high when the roots go deep
Your peace will come, but it won’t come cheap
If you take this hand and you play for keeps
      and you give a damn
      and you give a damn
    9. Trouble
      Well, I’m in trouble…
Well you come up from the fire
and you’re calling out my name
I can’t hide in holy water
Feel the heat right through the rain
      I got pleasure double
I’m in trouble and it’s heaven
      I like misbehavin’
and your pastures look so green
      I’m about to show you
what I don’t want you to see
      I got pleasure double
I’m in trouble and it’s heaven

      There’s a place for me
between the heavens and the deep
that’s sometimes dark and sometimes sweet
I’m gonna take this ride for a little while
      You know what I mean

You say rules are just for reference
So take me across that yellow line
      You provide the inspiration
That I need to feel inclined
      I got pleasure double
I’m in trouble and it’s heaven

      There’s a place for me
between the heavens and the deep
That’s sometimes dark and sometime sweet
I’m gonna take this ride for a little while
      You know what I mean

Well I’m not afraid of wisdom
      but I like flying blind
      I still want my salvation
but I’m gonna take my time
      I got pleasure double
I’m in trouble and it’s heaven

      There’s a place for me
between the heavens and the deep
That’s sometimes dark and sometime sweet
I’m gonna take this ride for a little while
      You know what I mean
    10. Orange (free)
She hates to comb her hair
She hates to take a bath
but once she’s in that tub,
      you’ll never get her out
She loves to ride a horse
      She loves a summer swim
      Never hurt a heart,
so she won’t choose a best friend

      Orange, Orange
      Her favorite color orange
Big ball of fire, sweet citrus storm

She’ll beat you bad at Boggle
      In Scrabble let you tie
I’m a little shy to say
she’s read more books than I
Her words are few and far
      unless there’s pen in hand
Then she’ll write you out a story
      about her mama’s band

      Orange, Orange
      Her favorite color orange
      Tigers turned to kittens
on the day that she was born

      Light, light is the dusk
      and I worry sometimes,
I’m not worthy of the trust
      Sweet, sweet is the dawn
      It’s a privilege beyond…
      any privilege
      She’s a crazy cuddle bug
      An endless sofa spud
      She always slows me down
to watch a movie about love
She can tear up like a well
      and water’s all around
      I try to swim along
      so I don’t miss a sound

      Orange, Orange
      Her favorite color orange
      Tigers turned to kittens
on the day that she was born
    11. Devil To Pay
      There’s a devil in my baby’s house
      In my baby’s house
      When the sun falls
      That’s when she comes around
      That’s when she comes around
There’s a devil, and she knows his name
      Yes, she knows his name
      When he’s lonely
      When the sun goes down
      When he’s falling
      that’s when she comes around
      to my baby’s house
      Calling…Calling….

I don’t know what to say
      I can’t help anyway
      It’s your devil to pay

In the morning, that’s when baby cries
      That’s when my baby cries
And he suffers, and he feels regret
And he struggles, but he can’t forget
      No he can’t forget
      Calling…Calling….

I don’t know what to say
      I can’t help anyway
      It’s your devil to pay

      There’s a devil
      In my baby’s house
      In my baby’s house
And we battle but it’s not my fight
      No, it’s not my fight
      When he’s lonely
      When the sun goes down
      When he’s falling
      That’s when she comes around
      To my baby’s house
      Calling…Calling….

I don’t know what to say
      I can’t help anyway
      Every night, every day
      I can’t take it away
      I can’t take it away
      It’s your devil to pay
    12. Long Time With You
I saw the way you light a room
      the night I met you
In that light I just knew
      we’d be together
      Something old, something new
      I borrowed all that’s true
      and gave away the blue
Years gone longing for a kiss
      and a touch of fire
      Ended sweetly with a wish
      and an angel choir
Love had never felt like this,
      All roads open wide
To bring me home at night

I want to live a long time with you
Let me have a long time with you
I want to take a long time with you
      Let’s say we do

I know we’ll have our troubled times,
      Stormy points of view
I’ll be steady by your side,
      We’ll walk right through
      Copper, steel, pearls and wine
      I promise you we’ll fly
      Right through that diamond sky

I want to live a long time with you
Let me have a long time with you
I want to take a long time with you
      Let’s say we do

Let’s say we do, Let’s say I do,
My love is true, long time

I want to live a long time with you
Let me have a long time with you
I want to take a long time with you
I know I’ll be a long time with you
I want to be a long time with you...
Let’s say we do, never be through,
      Long time with you
  • Blame Sally
    1. Birds Fly South
The city lights are pretty bright
so he hitched a ride north from the border
With a little luck he’ll make a buck,
      rent a house and buy a four-door
Every day he’ll wake and say a prayer
      to God, the Father
That it won’t be long ‘til he can send for
      Mom and Juan, his brother
But the lights don’t shine in the city
      for Ramón
He spends a lot of time waiting for a
      chance in the job lines
And he knows that things are rough when
he remembers home as the good times
Every day he’ll wake and say a prayer
      to God, the Father
He still believes the old man will come through
      with one thing or another
But the lights don’t shine in the city
      for Ramón

Birds fly south (también en sueños Ramón)
      Birds fly south

63 days 63 nights, well that’s a pretty good try
Now he knows this town well enough
to know it’s time to say good-bye
Every day he wakes and says a prayer
      to God, the Father
Even though he’s pretty damn sure
      it ain’t worth the bother
Because the lights won’t shine in the city
      for Ramón
No, the lights don’t shine in the city
      for Ramón

Birds fly south (también en sueños Ramón)
Birds fly south (y en sus sueños el va)
Birds fly south (y de verdad)
      and so does Ramón
    2. Lucky
      I’ll walk the pretty way,
even though I can’t go home
      I’ll watch the colors fade,
      even though I’m not alone
      I’ve seen destruction and demise
I’ve seen the look of pure love in your eyes
I’ll wake and take with me,
      what ever comes that day
I’m beaten down, but I’m not too tired to play
      On indecision and debris
I lost my footing and I fell free

      I’m lucky
      I landed lightly
      I’m lucky

Now I can dry my eyes
      and wish beyond regret
The reasons why I left, I’m learning to forget
One rainy night on Hallow’s Eve
I jumped up high and caught the kiss
      of something sweet

      I’m lucky
      I landed lightly
      I’m lucky

      You know I never cried,
      I never used to cry,
      You know I never cried,
      You know I never cried

      I’m lucky
      I landed lightly
      I’m lucky
    3. Water
The red tide flows down in the cove
We’re barefoot over smooth sounding stones
      and I like I like I like…
You said, it’s been raining for days now
Big giant drops bouncing up off the street
You didn’t know I’m always wet anyhow
      Violet green tidepools soaking up
      through my feet
We’re sitting on the edge of the red soggy bank
the future flowing in the tide below
I try to collect the right words from the waves
but anything I say you must already know

      I’m dipping into your pool
Trying not to get caught there
      I ’m dipping

Do you feel like the ocean sometimes
Not the white of the waves but the place below
I said, yeah this tests sand and sky
I find myself calmed by the undertow
The red tide flows down in the cove
We’re barefoot over smooth sounding stones
      and I like I like I like…

      I’m dipping into your pool
Trying not to get caught there
      Dipping into your pool
      Wondering why I stop here

You feed me oranges in the back seat
to protect me from the sadness
Barely my lips and your wet fingers meet
and for a moment I forget the madness
    4. Stupid Mistakes
I said I’d be fine in a while
You know, I think I just might
Things will look different, I hope
When the day replaces the night
I can be brave when I want
      My body is strong
I said I’d be fine in a while
and you know, I hope I’m not wrong

Oh Lord, please keep me safe
      I keep on tripping over
      my stupid mistakes
You can make stones skip on a lake
      but they’ll eventually sink
There’s always a price to pay
when you act before you think
I closed my eyes to myself
while you entered my body that night
      Now the bill’s coming due
and baby we both feel not right

Oh Lord, please keep me safe
      I keep on tripping over
      my stupid mistakes

I heard the sound of a train last night
and when I woke, the feeling was strong
A whistle had filled up the night
for a moment and then it was gone
It left me with tears on my face
      and sadness for innocence lost
There’s always a price to pay
but I wish I’d know the cost
Yeah, I wish I’d known the cost

Oh Lord, please keep me safe
      I keep on tripping over
      my stupid mistakes
    5. Disappear
      Safe within the silence
      of rushing rivers red
I’m falling in, to deep canyons
      You couldn’t wait ‘til daylight
      to come into my dreams
      Now you follow
      Me, I’m flying
I have never held this hand before
But you know where to take me
      High above the blackness
to the edge of the things that scare me
      Held up by the darkness
and the depth of you and me
I’m falling in the spaces in between

      I disappear
      I’m still standing here
      I disappear
      I’m still standing here
      Disappear

      Safe within the silence
      Love is in my head
I’m falling in, to deep canyons
When I was tired of being lonely
      Tired of being brave
I let you stop me from spinning around
      in my old stories
I have never held this hand before
But you know where to take me
      High above the blackness
to the edge of the things that scare me
I will learn to trust the darkness
      and question the light
      Your honesty
will be the death of me
      or save my life

      I disappear
      I’m still standing
      I disappear
      I’m still standing here
      Disappear
    6. Touch
      I can’t say why I’m running away
I walked on water just the other day
Now I’m sunk so deep I don’t see the light
Sitting right here on the living room floor
Looking to find the perfect chord
but everything I play sounds so yesterday

      Touch might have gave us
      It might have saved us
Touch might have made us a little more whole
      Touch might have made us
      It might have saved us
Touch might have gave us a little more soul

I usually hide my truth inside
      Some clever, trite, poetic rhyme
that keeps my eyes dry and lets me fly
But I’m too old to look away
and still too young to know the way
How many times do I have to watch
      a good love die

      Touch might have gave us
      It might have saved us
Touch might have made us a little more whole
      Touch might have made us
      It might have saved us
Touch might have gave us a little more soul

I wish you’d never gone away
I wish I had the mind of a saint or a nun or a
      sweet baby crying

      Touch might have gave us
      It might have saved us
Touch might have made us a little more whole
      Touch might have made us
      It might have saved us
Touch might have gave us a little more soul
    7. Shame
Give it here I’m feeling it, tasting it, drinking it
      Second-hand and broken down
I found it in an airport lounge
peeled it up off of the ground,
it was trampled flat and stained
Took it out into the light,
gave it love, made it right
      thought of all the ways
I ’ve tried to hide away my shame

      My shame, my shame

      The quality of my demands
has changed of late, I understand
some dreams can take you by the hand
then wrap you up in chains
Once I built a pretty room,
Cared too much of pleasing you
I think I’m finally cutting through
      these iron bars of shame

      My shame, my shame

Give it here, I’m feeling it, tasting it, drinking it
I wanna swim in it, live in it, give in to it,
      then give it up
Give it here, I'm hearing it, seeing it, touching it
I wanna swim in it, live in it, give in to it,
      then give it up

      The fault-line in my womanhood,
      The pain I never understood
The bad that crouched beneath the good
      and didn’t have a name
The sweet that left a bitter taste
The love that sometimes turned to hate
The things I never could escape,
I 'm face to face with shame

      My shame, my shame

Give it here, I’m feeling it, tasting it, drinking it
I wanna swim in it, live in it, give in to it,
      then give it up
Give it here, I'm hearing it, seeing it, touching it
I wanna swim in it, live in it, give in to it,
      then give it up
    8. Gentle Pirate
      Fell in the middle
      of something familiar
      Hot salt tangled
      at the end of July
      Fell in the middle
      afraid to remember
      White, light forehead
      Skin under sky

      Gentle Pirate
      show me the way
      Keep my head above water
while I’m deep in the waves

      Down in the middle
      I let myself need her
      Blue water simple
      Permanence
      Down in the middle
      of an ocean familiar
      I should not be here

      Gentle Pirate
      show me the way
      Keep my head above water
while I’m deep in the waves
    9. Back To Me
I like the way that you hold my hand
and I love the way that your hair falls down
when you press your mouth against my own
and you do the things that make me moan
I like the fact that your heart is pure
and you’re strong and wild and soft and sure
and gave me hope to love again
so you’re the one that I let in

Baby, Baby, come back to me
Don’t you know that we got so much
to see together, and we just got started
Baby, Baby come back to me
I know you’ve got a choice to make
and somebody’s heart is gonna break,
Lord, don’t let it be me

I know the way that you feel inside
like an ax will drop when you finally decide
and either way you lose a piece
of what you want and what you need
And though I try to let you go
be cool inside and just lay low
I want you here with me tonight
I miss you bad, I miss you right

Baby, Baby, come back to me
Don’t you know that we got so much
to see together, and we just got started
Baby, Baby come back to me
I know you’ve got a choice to make
and somebody’s heart is gonna break,
Lord, don’t let it be me

      I’ve had so many heartaches,
so please don’t be hurting me
      I’ve had so many heartaches
so please don’t be hurting me
    10. La Llorona
Todos me dicen El Negro, Llorona,
      negro pero cariñoso
Todos me dicen El Negro, Llorona,
      negro pero cariñoso

Yo soy como el chile verde, Llorona,
      picante pero sabroso
Yo soy como el chile verde, Llorona,
      picante pero sabroso

      Ay de mi Llorona
      Llorona de ayer y hoy
      Ay de mi Llorona
      Llorona de ayer y hoy

      Ayer maravilla fuí, Llorona,
      y ahora ni sombra soy
      Ayer maravilla fuí, Llorona,
      y ahora ni sombra soy

Dicen que no tengo duelo Llorona,
      porque no me ven llorar
Dicen que no tengo duelo Llorona,
      porque no me ven llorar

Hay muertos que no hacen ruido Llorona,
y es mas grande su penar
Hay muertos que no hacen ruido Llorona,
y es mas grande su penar

      Ay de mi Llorona,
      Llorona de azul celeste
      Ay de mi Llorona,
      Llorona de azul celeste

Y aunque la vida me cueste Llorona,
      no dejaré de quererte
Y aunque la vida me cueste Llorona,
      no dejaré de quererte
    11. The Planet Ranch
Mickey was the hippest chick at the Planet Ranch
When I was eight she was crowned
      Miss Parker, Arizona
We’d listen to Neil Diamond in her trailer home
Her talent was playing the trumpet
Leroy, the mechanic, well he was pretty old
He liked to talk to spaceships in the desert
Once we tried to follow him real late at night
but we were too scared of coyotes

He’d drive on up that hill
      every night, every night
With a six pack and his transistor
He swore they spoke to him
      every night, every night
But they didn’t want him to take their picture

I remember once when things were sort of tight
We had to entertain some bankers and their wives
Ella cooked a dinner and a chocolate cake
then Leroy came in for some cocktails
Mickey and us kids were dancing
      to “Sweet Caroline”
      Leroy and the banker’s wives
were getting drunk on red wine
He told them about the aliens
      and why they were here
He said they needed uranium for fuel

He’d drive on up that hill
      every night, every night
With a six pack and his transistor
He swore they spoke to him
      every night, every night
But they didn't want him to take their picture

Twenty years have passed, there’s a lot I don’t know
The business went under, everyone was let go
I hear Mickey lives in Kingman and Ella’s retired
but Leroy hangs out in the desert
    12. Dead Horse
I see you’re all set up
      You’ve got everything you need
The day you left me standing alone
to face my deprivation and greed
If I don’t die in the end
If I can just stay afloat
I’m gonna fly to the moon
instead of sinking down in your moat
You gotta know that I cared
You gotta know that I tried
I didn’t know how to melt you down
and drink in all your beautiful light
You always smell like a rose
You speak and don’t make a sound
Your holy heart shining so bright all the
while you grind me into the ground

I hope one day I can say I’m ok
that I’m out of the red
      and stop banging my head
I hope one day you can learn how to say
      that you feel some remorse
and I’ll stop beating a dead horse

The tools were out of our hands
      nothing left to revive
Blow a kiss and watch innocent souls
      disappearing into the sky
You gotta know that I cared
You gotta know that I tried
I didn’t know how to make you see
that my love for you was
deep and wide, deep and wide

I hope one day I can say I’m ok
that I’m out of the red
      and stop banging my head
I hope one day you can learn how to say
      that you feel some remorse
and I’ll stop beating a dead horse
    13. Speed of Light
      Hold on tight, love
      We’re picking up speed
if you feel like you’re falling
      Fall into me
You don’t have to be the strong one
      when you’re caught in between
I could tell you a story
to make you feel all right
I could use all the voices
      that I push down inside
      Silence is golden
      All love is blind

Put your hand on my shoulder
      look in my eyes
      You don’t have to wonder
      We’re gonna be all right
Because when we turn this corner
      we’re in for a ride
      Speed of light

      Light can bend
      My love won’t end
      Here we go again
      We’ll sail through the darkness
      We’ll reach through the sky
      Higher then heaven
      We’re gonna fly
      You and I
      Where will this take us
      How far, how high

Put your hand on my shoulder
      Look in my eyes
      You don’t have to wonder
      We’re gonna be all right
Because when we turn this corner
      we’re in for a ride
      Speed of light
